The Australian majors have been slow although BHP Billiton was said to have taken the 170,276-dwt 2001-built Kyla Fortune for period linked against the BCI 4-timecharterer average, but this was not confirmed. The Hua Tu 1992-built 150,000-dwt open Zhoushan 1-8 April fixed, but little else emerged. Cargill covered a Newcastle/China run, but a rate was not reported. Pacific Bulk earlier had a 160,000-tonne 10% cargo on subjects from Saldanha to Qingdao for 15-30 April at $14.05. The charterer was linked with the Noni M, but this proved inaccurate. At the end of last week Oldendorff fixed the 2005-built Jean LD for a 1-10 April 160,000-tonne 10% cargo Tubarao to Qingdao. PANAMAXES A lack of new business kept a check on the market with some already suggesting the rates may have peaked. The market remained one dimensional with South American grain activity leading the way, but transatlantic business in short supply. The east saw some fixing but here too the attraction of South American trade lured some tonnage into ballasting, but the market here too needed a fresh influx of round voyage business. There was some doubt that the rate was accurate or that it was a South America loader The Yangtze Xing Zhong 2012-built 82,000-dwt 18-19 March Visakhapatnam was said on subjects for a trip via east coast South America to the east at around $11,000 daily, but a charterer was not disclosed. At the end of last week Bunge paid the 79,607-dwt 2010-built Dora Schulte a strong $17,000 daily plus a $650,000 bonus for Santos for a trip to the east. The Joyous Land 69,283-dwt 1994-built due today Singapore was said on subjects for a round voyage via Santos. The 2009-built RBD relet Lily Atlantic 82,600-dwt was rumoured booked to United for two laden legs with 17 March delivery passing Singapore with a first leg from Brazil to Argentina and then a trip from Argentina to the east at $10,000 daily. However sources said this was incorrect and the ship remained in the market. The 1997-built 73,762-dwt Kalypso open Corpus Christi 20 March was said on subjects for a trip to the east, but it emerged in late trade the ship went to Bunge for delivery gulf for a trip to Spain at $9,600 daily plus a $260,000 bonus, but some also suggested $9,750 daily plus $290,000 bonus was agreed. Transatlantic trading was limited although Bunge booked the 82,992-dwt 2009-built Grand Challenger, open on the US east coast, for delivery Pointe Noire for a trip via Turkey and Cape Passero redelivery at $11,000 daily plus a $290,000 bonus. ABT took the Captain Antonis, 82,177-dwt 2011-built spot Cape Passero for two laden legs for trading within the Atlantic at $11,000 daily, but this includes a Ponta Da Madeira/US Gulf pigiron leg. ASIA PCL took the Medi Salerno 81,702-dwt 2008-built open 20 March CJK for an Indonesia/India, run, but a rate was not reported. The Orsolina Bottiglieri 2001-built 75,200-dwt Singapore 19 March went on subjects. HANDY/SUPRAMAXES ATLANTIC For the larger sizes, the Boron Navigator, 2001-built 50,300-dwt was rumoured to have agreed about $16,000 daily for north coast South America for a trip to this side possibly with Pacbasin. A 47,000-tonner coming open in West Africa had agreed a rate in the low $9,000 daily plus a bonus for short period, but details were vague.
