CAPESIZES
BHP Billiton made a foray into the market following Cyclone woes,
but at easier rates.
The major took the Pacific Capella a 2010-built EdF relet for a
5-10 April cargo at $7.55 from Port Hedland to China. BHP Billiton had
earlier fixed the Ocean Queen, 2004-built for early April shipment at
$7.75.
There were rumours the Australian major had taken more ships, but
little emerged.
Another EdF relet went to Louis Dreyfus for 1-10 April shipment
from West Australia to China at $7.75 probably from West Australia.
The Maria A. Angelicoussi, 169,163-dwt 2001-built spot Zhhangjiang
spot was earlier said still on subjects for a round in the east, but
little surfaced.
Winning fixed and failed with the Orsola Bottiglieri 2011-built
178,076-dwt spot Singapore for a trip via India to China, but the
business failed.
Rates remained very weak in the Atlantic with a shortage of
cargoes. Ilva allegedly took a Pacific Bulk Europe vessel for a 5-14
April 170,000-tonne 10% ore cargo from Ponta Da Madeira to Taranto at
no more than $7.90.
The Lowlands Beilun, a 170,162-dwt 1999-built EdF relet fixed
transatlantic cargo with Cargill, but this involved a swap and was
concluded last week.

PANAMAXES
Another largely slow day with South America again the focus, but
here Thomson Reuters news reports said that Argentine truckers taken
grains to the export terminal have gone on indefinite strike.
The Argentine government expects the 2011/12 soy harvest, which
began this month, to come in at 43.5 million to 45 million tonnes. The
corn crop, which started being collected last month, is forecast by
the government at 21 to 22 million tonnes.
The FETRA group of trucking companies said the government had
failed to ensure the implementation of a guaranteed minimum hauling
tariff that was agreed to after a strike in October
There remained some mixed views on transatlantic trading with those
suggesting that some of the coal business fixed equated to little more
than a timecharter equivalent of around $5,500 daily.
In the east, there has been an increase in fresh business with
still a fair amount of Indonesian coal. NoPac and Australia cargoes
were less visible, but there were some good rates paid for quality
ships.
Period activity was in evidence though not prolific. The
2011-built 82,177-dwt Mastro Nikos was reported fixed for 5 to 7
months trading earlier with delivery Chiwan 21-25 March at $11,000
daily, but a charterer was not reported.

ATLANTIC
Golden Ocean took the 81,500-dwt 2011-built Panther Max, a GMI
relet, on subjects Cape Passero delivery 19 March for a trip via the
US east coast to India at $16,000 daily.
There was talk that CMN booked tonnage on subjects with Sea of
Marmara delivery for a trip via the Black Sea to the Far East at
$20,500 daily.
The Hang Ta 74,682-dwt 1998-built open Vila Do Conde, was linked
with Oldendorff for a grain cargo from Ponta Da Madeira to the east,
but a rate was not reported.
Transatlantic business was largely focussed on the coal trades. EdF
took the Scandinavian Express 2010-built 93,038-dwt for a 3-12 April
75,000-tonne 10% coal cargo from Newport News to Icdas, Turkey at
$15.50 with 30000shinc load and 15,000shinc discharge.
Peabody took the 73,937-dwt 1998-built Halo Cygnus open Aughinish
20 March for a coal cargo from the US east coast to Italy, but a rate
was not reported.
Phaethon allegedly took the Giovanni 72,394-dwt 1996-built spot
Damietta on subjects for Cape Passero delivery for a trip via the US
east coast to Egypt with Cape Passero redelivery at $7,250 daily.
However on the short Murmansk rounds ships were being fixed in the
mid $5,000 daily range.
Bunge paid the Kalypso, 73,762-dwt 1997-built $9,750 daily plus a
$290,000 bonus for a trip from Corpus Christi via the US Gulf to Spain
and not $11,000 daily plus $280,000 bonus as earlier reported.

ASIA
In the east, it emerged that Bunge took the very economical
newbuilding Ikan Berkas  ex yard Sasebo 22 March for a NoPac round at
$8,000 daily - a premium number some sources said.
There was talk a 73,000 tonner open in China was booked for a NoPac
round in the high $6,000 daily range, but little else emerged.
There was talk that GPN booked a 70,000-tonner open south China for
an Indonesian round at $7,500 daily.
Topsail fixed a Kalimantan/south China coal cargo at $8.50, but
little else emerged.
Elsewhere EShips relet the 74,545-dwt 1999-built Alpha Flame open
30-31 March Jebel Ali for a trip from India to China, but a rate was
not reported.
Visa Chartering Ltd Hong Kong has a Panamax on subjects for a
75,000-tonne 10% coal cargo from Richards Bay to New Mangalore option
Dahej for 30 March cancelling, but again a rate was not disclosed.

HANDY/SUPRAMAXES

ATLANTIC
In the US Gulf, STX Pan Ocean booked the Apageon 53,806-dwt
2005-built at a strong $17,000 daily for an early April scrap cargo
with Mississippi River delivery to the eastern Mediterranean.
A 2011-built 58,000-dwt vessel open east coast Florida end March for
aps Hampton Roads for a trip to Poland at $11,500 daily. It was said
that the owner was reluctant to consider trading the ship in scrap and
petcoke.
The Western Singapore a Tess 52 type, was rumoured from Vila Do
Conde to the Continent possibly with NYK, but a rate was not reported.
The DST Queen 2011-built 58,000-dwt spot River Plate was said to
have gone for an off market cargo on voyage from the area to Saudi Red
Sea with grains. There was some suggestion it could be with
Transgrain.
On the Continent, a Tess 52 type, open in Antwerp 22 March was
rating business to the Far East at about $12,000 daily with very
little business to go for. The same vessel was also rating aps US Gulf
to go east at $22,000 daily.
In the smaller size range, rates remained healthier from South
America and Cargill was said to have taken a 1984-built vessel for a
26,000-tonne bulk sugar cargo from north Brazil to the Black Sea at a
stronger $33.00.
Glencore paid the King Sugar a firmer $39.75 for a 1-10 April
25,000-tonne 10% barley cargo from Bahia Blanca to Casablanca with
8,000 tonnes load and 5,000-tonnes discharge.
The Niki T 27,802-dwt 1997-built open Dominican Republic prompt
fixed aps Ochos Rios to move limestone to New Orleans for about 12
days trading at $5,500 daily.

ASIA
Nasco was reported to have taken the Avra 2004-built 53,806-dwt for
aps Iran end March for a trip east with iron ore at $13,000 daily plus
a $30,000 bonus.
However details were incorrect with the delivery allegedly not
correct and with the rate agreed was higher.
WBC paid the Rinia, 56,746-dwt 2012-built a firm $14,000 daily
plus a $400,000 bonus for a trip from Richards Bay to India-Pakistan.
The Athos, 2004-built 52,500-dwt open Japan spot fixed a trip
allegedly via the Philippines to the Mediterranean with nickel ore at
a softer $5,500 daily.
A 53,000-tonner open Singapore was rumoured booked for a trip via
Indonesia to China at $17,000 daily.
A 57,000-tonner open Xingang 24-25 March was rumoured on subjects
for a nickel ore round with redelivery south China at about $14,000
daily for mid China and $15,000 daily for the north.
Another 57,000-tonner 2011-built open Guanzhou 22 March went for a
trip from Indonesia to China at about $11,500 daily,
A 2010-built 58,500-dwt vessel rumoured fixed retroactive Longkou
14 March for a nickel ore round at $14,000 daily.
For the smaller sizes, rates remained at good levels with the
Taizhou Pioneer, 31,800-dwt 2011-built fixing from Taicang 26-28 March
to move logs from New Zealand to China at a strong $11,000 daily
