CAPESIZES
The market remained in the doldrums with today's BCI 4 timecharter
average at $4,708 daily the lowest number since 28 February 2011.
Rio Tinto featured in the market but took only two ships both for
8-12 April from Dampier to Qingdao and both at $7.50. One was the
Golden Zhejiang and the other an EdF vessel.
It emerged that the 2010-built EdF relet Pacific Capella did not fix
with BHP Billiton for a Port Hedland/Qingdao cargo at $7.55, although
the Australian shipper did fix a ship at this rate for 5-10 April.
The Pacific Capella has since been linked with Cargill on a West
Australia run, but details were not disclosed.
Cargill failed with the Greta Selmer 2011-built 175,181-dwt open
Xingang 25 March for an Australian round with south China redelivery
at $4,500 daily or $5,500 daily if north China.
Winning reportedly took a couple more ships, a Japanese vessel from
Singapore spot for a trip via Indonesia to China, but a rate was not
disclosed. The charterer was also said to have taken the 1995-built
152,000-dwt Brazil open Hong Kong spot fixed similar business, but
again a rate was not reported.
In the Atlantic there was talk that Cargill booked tonnage for a
12-21 April 160,000-tonne 10% cargo from Tubarao to Qingdao at $19.40
- a low rate. However some sources said the charterer possibly used
in-house tonnage.
China Steel Express took the Excel for a 27 March-5 April
120,000-tonne 10% cargo from Port Cartier to Kaohsiung at under
$30.00.
Transatlantic rates too remained very weak with talk that the
Navios Pollux 180,727-dwt 2009-built, a China Cosco Beijing relet,
which was 16 March Gijon, fixed for a transatlantic round at $2,500
daily, but a charterer was not reported.
TKS took a Cargill vessel for a 15-29 April 180,000-tonne 10% cargo
from Guaiba to Rotterdam at $8,65, although some put the rate a touch
lower.
Elcano booked a Cosbulk ship for 10-24 April 160,000-tonne 10% from
Ponta Da Madeira to Rotterdam at just $7.50.
SVS covered a 27-30 April 110,000-tonne 10% cargo from Saldanha to
Redcar, but details were not reported.
PANAMAXES
There were signs that rates have peaked for South American traders
for now as charterers once again looked to take tonnage on an aps
basis or passing the Cape of Good Hope..
Fixing was still evident but the pace slowed. A few Panamaxes were
held up by strikes in Argentina, but much of the activity for grain
recently has been from Brazil.
There has been a good volume of fixing transatlantic over the past
few days few days, but rates have largely held steady rather than
pushed on. Fresh business is needed, brokers said.
Inquiry has picked up in the east, although this market to some
extent still remained dependent on South America trade. Rates paid
were mixed with ships trading from Japan booked a good levels with
demand still evident. Indonesia remained relatively active though Post
Panamaxes here continued to struggle.
Australian trading was hampered earlier with adverse weather
affecting Queensland ports and problems with trainlines, brokers said.
Period trading was again limited today with little new reported
fixed. Quadra was said to have taken the Fortune East 75,615-dwt
2000-built open in the east for short period at $9,750 daily.
