CAPESIZES
Falling rates resulting in the lowest 4-timecharter average for
over a year provided a gloomy end to the week for the big ships. In
the east the major Australian shippers made a brief appearance in the
market, but their activity was limited resulting in a further squeeze
on rates.
Rio Tinto fixed the Chou Shan 2005-built 175,569-dwt at $7.45 for
an 8 April onwards cargo - showing a return of about $1,500 daily on a
180,000-tonner. Earnings were negligible on ships coming from anywhere
other than Taiwan or south China.
Essentially there was little interest from charterers to fix on
timecharter with rates gradually eroded on lack of volume.
Winning was one of the few to take ships and was linked with a
2010-built 180,000-tonner for early April for delivery Bintan Island
for a trip to China at $9,000 daily and no bonus.
The same charterer also fixed the Huikanghai 1999-buuilt
149,680-dwt early April delivery Zhanjiang for a trip via Indonesia to
north China at $4,900 daily.
Charterers were talking as little as $4,000 daily for South African
rounds for 180,000 tonnes.
The 177,000-dwt 2007-built Unique Carrier, a Trafigura relet ex
drydock Shanghaiguan 25 March was reported fixed, but details were not
disclosed.
The Marvellous, 2000-built, which had been Dhamra 8 March has now
fixed with STX Pan Ocean for a 150,000-tonne 10% coal cargo from
Richards Bay to Dhamra at $12.00
In the Atlantic, despite the 180,727-dwt 2009-built Navios Pollux
fixing to Swiss Marine retroactive 16 March for a round at $2,500
daily, there remained a chronic shortage of Capesizes in the Atlantic
largely on the almost zero backhaul activity in the market.
There was just a faint glimmer of hope - some called it wishful
thinking - with more Colombia/US east coast coal, but this has yet to
translate in to higher numbers.
NYK secured the NSC tender from Ponta Da Madeira/Japan for 10-24
April shipment. NYK will use its on ship Front Mirage 2011-built
180,200-dwt open early April Ijmuiden with some suggestion the rate
equated to $17,000 daily.
STX Pan Ocean was reported to have taken the 2011-built Centrans
Lunar for a 1-10 April 160,000-tonne 10% ore cargo from Tubarao to
Qingdao, but a rate was not reported. There were those that said this
was not a straightforward deal and that it could be some kind of
'washout'.

PANAMAXES
The usually largely 'quiet' end to the week although rates were
little changed, although rates nudged up for NoPac grains in the east.
Essentially the trading largely focussed on South American grain,
but the market appeared for today to be in stand-off with the gap yet
to narrow between charterers and owners. There was talk of fresh
cargoes but largely second half April and there were still a few early
ships yet to fix.
Charterers as the week drew to a close where once again aiming to
fix on an aps basis.
The transatlantic trades were largely flat although rates have
improved for ships in the US Gulf for cargoes to the Continent, but
again there has been little done on an aps basis. There was more
activity further north, but little fresh was reported fixed.
The east saw a 15-year old 73,000-tonner open Japan agreeing a
little over $8,000 daily for a NoPac round. There was some fresh
fixing from Australia and Indonesia too has been more active while
some ships continued to look towards South America.
Period trading was limited with the short period rate drifting
towards the mid $9,000 daily range.

ATLANTIC
The Key Hunter, 2011-built 82,800-dwt fixed for Praia Mole
delivery end March-early April for a trip to the east at $16,500 daily
plus a $650,000 bonus with Oldendorff.
Cargill took earlier the Ulusoy-12, 80,000-dwt 2011-built for trip
from Santos 8-12 April  to the east at $16,250 daily with the same
bonus.
Elsewhere the Ostria S 76,000-dwt 2008-built open 27 March El
Dekheila as reported fixed, but little emerged.
The Post Panamax Bottiglieri Challenger 93,352-dwt 2010-built open
Taranto 6-9 April fixed via the Black Sea to China at a strong $24,000
daily with Richstone.
Lucchini was said to have covered a St.Lawrence/Piombino cargo on
subjects at $14.00, but details were sketchy.
Bunge covered a 15-25 April 70,000-tonne 10% coal cargo from
Norfolk to Gijon at an unexciting $12.75 while SSE fixed tonnage for
an 11-15 April 65,000-tonne 10% coal cargo from Santa Marta to
Liverpool at $17.35.
The Tiare 83,000-dwt 2009-built open Nordenham 27-28 March fixed a
short round, but little else emerged.
The Lowlands Queen, 76,565-dwt 2005-built was linked with MDS for
29-30 March delivery Southwest Pass for a trip via Egypt with Cape
Passero redelivery at $10,000 daily plus a $380,000 bonus, but some
said this failed on subjects and was said to have fixed to others at
the same rate unless it did refix to MDS.
There was talk the United relet Unicorn Ocean 78,888-dwt 2008-built
open Point Comfort 8-9 April was said on subjects for a transatlantic
round with coal, but a rate was not reported.
Windrose was linked with the 1989-built 69,703-dwt Vitaglory for
12-18 April delivery Southwest Pass for a trip with Cape Passero
redelivery at around $9,750 daily plus a $325,000 bonus.

 ASIA
There was talk that the 73,726-dwt 1997-built Piro open Osaka was
rumoured close to fixing a NoPac round with grain at something over
$8,000 daily with a South Korean charterer.
The Daiichi-controlled Blue Wave, 87,334-dwt 2011-built open end
March-early April Hibikinada fixed for a NoPac round with coal at
$9,000 daily.
BHP Billiton earlier had the Mulberry Paris 76,492-dwt 2004-built
on subjects open CJK for an east coast Australian round at $8,000
daily and was said to be in the market for another ship.
Glencore was linked with the Mega Ocean, 79,342-dwt 2010-built for
delivery Thailand for a trip via South Australia and Saudi Arabia with
PMO redelivery at $9,000 daily. The cargo was for 10-15 April loading.
Earlier Alfred C.Toepfer took the 1999-built 74,436-dwt Ever
Shining spot Rizhao for a similar run at $8,000 daily.
However there were others said to be talking significantly more for
grain into Iran.
Elsewhere the Yong Feng, 74,099-dwt 2000-built open Fangcheng 25-30
March for a trip via Indonesia to south China at $8,000 daily.

HANDY/SUPRAMAXES

ATLANTIC
Rates for Supramaxes in the east remained healthy particularly in
the US Gulf where rates were around $22,500 daily for the good types.
The 55,429-dwt 2009-built Calypso Colossus for end March delivery
north coast South America to Chile at a good $21,250 daily.
It emerged that the Global Glory, 45,769-dwt 1998-built went to
Oldendorff for end March delivery US Gulf for a trip to Morocco at
$15,000 daily and not $14,000 daily as earlier reported.

ASIA
The 2011-built Puffin Bulker 58,000-dwt spot Xiamen fixed for a
trip via Indonesia to China an 'ok' $11,500 daily.
In the smaller size range, Western Bulk Carriers took a
32,000-tonner earlier this week from CJK for a trip to Southeast Asia
at $9,000 daily.
